Lottery

History of the Louisiana Lottery

The Louisiana Lottery was created in 1991 as a way to generate revenue for the state without raising taxes thanks to a constitutional amendment passed by voters in 1990. The first scratch-off games went on sale on September 6th, 1991 and Powerball tickets went on sale in the state in 1995. The state joined the Mega Millions game in November 2011.

As of July 2004, Louisiana Lottery proceeds raised through ticket sales are allocated to the Minimum Foundation Program, which helps raise money for K-12 education in the state. Out of every dollar in ticket sales, 35.5 cents is transferred to the State Treasury to help children across the state receive the education they need to succeed in every stage of their lives.

Rules

The minimum age to play the lottery in Louisiana is 21, unlike in many other states where it is 18, this applies to both residents and visitors.

If you receive a ticket with a misprint then you need to alert your retailer as soon as possible. Refunds cannot be given for scratch-offs that have already been scratched or tickets for drawings which have already taken place.

Louisiana lottery games are not drawn on Christmas Day or Easter Sunday, if multi-state games Powerball and Mega Millions fall on these dates then they will still be drawn as normal.
